Can I Pick My Puppy?

Waiting puppy buyers often ask if they will be able to pick out their own puppy. Since we take the placement of each puppy into its new family very seriously and want new homes to be forever ones , the answer is most often “no”.

A good breeder spends a lot of time with a litter of puppies. From day one, it’s a 24/7 job! We watch them grow and develop personalities, as well as interact with each other and Mom on a daily basis. We see each puppy at different times of the day and in different situations and environments. Nobody knows each puppy’s temperament and personality better than the person responsible for its care for the first 8 weeks of its life.

We ask all potential puppy buyers to fill out a Puppy Buyer Questionnaire to help us get to know each family a little better. By filling out this application, you help us to get a feel for what the lifestyle is and what characteristics you are looking for in your puppy. An active, young family is more likely to be looking for an outgoing, energetic, rough and tumble puppy that can keep up with a busy lifestyle, young children, or lots of travel, while a retired couple might be looking for a more laid back, calmer puppy.

Puppy buyers often visit a litter before the pups are ready to go and will see the puppies for only an hour or two . These short visits are fun but not enough time to get a true feel for each individual puppy’s personality or to know which one would best fit into a household. Sometimes, depending on the time of day and circumstances, the more high energy puppy in a litter might be tired or having a quiet nap when a family comes to visit. A family looking for a quiet, more laid back puppy might mistakenly think that this puppy is the right one for them. If allowed to make the choice, they might very well choose to take that particular puppy home only to find out a day or two later that the puppy they picked was not so laid back after all! The same can be said for the quiet , laid back puppy having a busy, high energy kind of day when a family comes to visit. A family looking for a pup that is full of energy to match a busy lifestyle, might choose this puppy and later on find out that it might not have been the perfect match after all. Do remember that all puppies have “busy” days and quiet days, good days and bad days - - - they’re puppies, after all!

It is very important to us that each puppy is matched with the right family. We want our puppies to be happy and we want YOU to enjoy your new puppy for many years to come. For this to happen, we need to make the best match possible between puppy and new family, a process we take VERY seriously. We want you to feel that you have the perfect puppy. So please trust our ability to choose the puppy that is going to best fit into your family and bring you many years of joy and unadulterated fun!
